From the Preface: “The papers and addresses brought together in this book are presented in order to sustain the affectionate remembrances of the late Bishop Nathaniel Dandridge Pendleton, held by his numerous friends and admirers. The selections rest on the ground that they are, perhaps, fairly characteristic of this mind and its caried interests and moods, over a lengthy portion of his life.

If they help to strengthen the memory of what he tried to do and teach, that is a sufficient reason for the work.
