The Sermon on the mount is the acknowledged statement of the ideal Christian life. However, too many of us read it without recognizing the depth of meaning in the passages. Are the beatitudes to be taken literally? Also, what is meant by phrases such as an “eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth,” and “judge not lest ye be judged?”
